I've had problems with my Digisnap cable release mechanism at times. I usually leave it in and wander around with my rig over my shoulder. Occasionally when I go to shoot, the camera locks up. I attributed it to the cable release coming loose. I have found that I can Velcro the cable to the camera making it much more secure. What once occurred several times a day hasn't happened for two days now.
