which lens would i need to.......?

i have been thinking about getting a secondhand camera setup and wondering what sort of lens i would need to equal a pair of 7/8 magnification binoculars,in power and resolution.i've only ever owned an old minolta mtl 3 with a tokina 300 and smaller zoom/macro lenses.there seems to be plenty of cheap 35 mm slr's on the market so would probably stick with secondhand equipment to start off with.
what i really want to know is what size mm lens would equal 7,8 and 10 powered binoculars,any advice welcomed.

Hi Matt,

Traditionally, as 50mm is the 'standard' focal length for 35mm, 50x7=350mm, 8x50=400 and 10x50=500.

ant.Err, no. 8x magnification = 8 x 50mm = 400mm lens
It's not exact but it serves as a reasonable point of reference.
