Does anyone have any recent information on birding around Granada in winter.

I am going for a few days at the end of January, and would appreciate any tips - especially about possible mountain species (Alpine Accentor etc?) in the Sierra Nevada area.

We will be staying in the city, but will hopefully be able to travel a little bit.

Any assistance gratefully received,

Gracias!

I replied to a similar request about Sierra Nevada a while ago. The information is in Laurence Rose's book on birds in Spain and Portugal, but I'll dig it out again in a day or two when I hope to have a bit more time!
P.S. How to you travel UK-Grenada?

I was in the Sierra Nevada in August.... Alpine Acc was easy enough then

Cheers - we are flying Ryanair Liverpool to Granada (1p per flight plus taxes = £30 each!).

Jane,

Cheers - all the literature I have refers to summer visits too - nothing about winter, when I fear they move to the coast for their winter break!

I'd try that grotesque ski resort Sol Y Nieve! But on a hunch - no prior knowledge

Not the latest info, but Spain used to be a cheap place for car rentals, and there are so many places that would be great within a 1-2 days drive from Grenada.

Very true - but this is my wife's 40th birthday treat so birding has to be incidental I'm afraid!

I visited Sierra Nevada in winter 1998 (while visiting some relatives), I spend about two days in this mountain area, very difficult to get down in most ravines and valleys, I mostly watched birds from the ridges and didnt really see much, stayed mostly along the roads.

But if you manage to get to some of the lakes in the region you have a large chance of seeing a lot of winter guest, mostly ducks but raptors and eagles are another family which are quite easily spotted in the mountain area.

Back - fantastic City, fantastic break and some incredible birding (despite the fact that I wasn't there on a birding break - just birding along the way as it were).

I'll post a report when I have time, with sites for a few interesting birds including very confiding Alpine Accentors!!

I'll look forward to that Rob. My wife and I are going for a week travelling round based on Nerja the first week in March. I might be allowed to look for birds now and then with a bit of luck!
