i was going to ocean city, and i just happened to spot a bald eagle in a field. My parents didn't even notice, so i yelled Bald eagle! Bald Eagle! my parents stopped the car and we watched the eagle eating, and my mother was sobbing like crazy. My dad got some good pictures of the bald eagle up close, i'll post them once i have them downloaded onto the computer. :cat:

Why not plan a visit to Minnesota during Jan or Feb. The Bald Eagle is doing very well in this state. Many nesting pairs of eagles make their winter homes along the Mississippi River near Red Wing and Wabasha. Sometimes one can see them by the hundreds there.

Could also try Texas or numerous other states. Maybe that is why this bird is being downlisted.

As wonderful of a sighting as seeing one always is, I didn't know the Bald Eagle was rare in Maryland?
There are plenty all over New England (and really in numerous pockets across the Eastern US). All along the Eastern coast, actually.
Not trying to be glib, inform me if I am wrong.

According to my Sibley, the Bald Eagle hangs out in Maryland all winter long. Still cool to see though, eh, birdgirl?

Ahh, yes...Sibley...I have somehow misplaced my copy, actually both of them; while I couldn't stand not having my book, I went out and bought the smaller Sibley eastern guide and, well, misplaced that within only a few hours of getting home. There is some kind of vortex in my house.
Nonetheless, very exciting to seeing one at a sit-still eating birdgirl.

What a load of Killjoys ;)!!!! Of course Bald Eagle aren't that rare in most states at certain times of the year but I think like most birds unless you are actively out looking you don't see that many. Also I don't think there are many birders who if you spot a BE out on a days birding don't want to have a look. Personally I prefer Goldens myself but still they are impressive birds.

I enjoy following them along the CT. River in the winter. I don't care if they are common I would rather chase down Bald Eagles than stay in the house. I especially enjoy watching them come in for a landing or lock talons. There's always a chance of seeing a Golden Eagle as well.

Whoa, hey, whoa!! Killjoys? Such a harsh word! :bounce:
I only question why this is under the heading of 'Rare Bird Info'.
Just last May, I had my first 'true' encounters with Bald Eagles up in Maine on Mt Desert Island. It was an unbelievable experience. We were staying in a house no more than an eighth of a mile from their nesting site. There were a couple days when the pair sat in trees right near the house calling out almost all day long.
I've said it before in a number of other posts, lately I am happy just to see a chickadee on any given day, let alone any sort of raptor.
By the way, just saw my first Golden a couple weeks back up in Vermont. Fantastic.

I just heard on the news tonight that there are about 800 pairs of nesting Bald Eagles in Minnesota!
Good news for the come back!

I go there every summer! That's where I had my first 'true' sighting of a Bald Eagle as well.

I love it there!
We normally go the week before Memorial Day, but this year we can't and are trying to decide when the best time to go would be. Earlier, we might end up being a bit cold and missing some of the warblers, later and we have to deal with all the people. What do you think? Any suggestions?
It has got to be my favorite area I have ever been to. You can find solitude on some of the trails even when there are a lot of people around. And forget about seeing anyone if you get up and out early enough. I hate planning this trip now, which is what we are doing, it just makes me want to get up and go.
I could go on and on.

I agree 100% Elizabeth. Why on a Rare Bird Info thread?
Another comment mentions 800 pairs in a single state. That is not RARE folks. While I love to see these birds, I question the thread being included here only.
