Hi , ive been out bird watching in gateshead today without much luck, made my first visit to Stargate pond hoping to see my first Green Woodpecker as ive been told that this site can be good for them, but to no avail, I did see a couple of either Bewick or Whoopper swans that passed just over my head on there way to the pond in the quary, what an amazing sound they made! has anybody got any tips for where to see a Green Woodpecker as its driving me mad. On my way home I thought about stopping at Blaydon station to see if there were any Waxwings yet, as this is another bird ive never seen, but I didnt bother, only to see on Gateshead birders website that there were 11 there this morning, typical. one bird I have been lucky with recently is the Kingfisher, has this been a good breeding year for them? as ive had more than 15 sightings in the last 6 weeks , some of them were the same bird im sure but there still appears to be a lot around. Im thinking of going to Hulne Park to try and see my first Hawfinch, any advice?
best wishes Stephen

Hi Stephen
One of my favourite birds Green Wpkr. Not exactly the best time of year to search for one, although i was lucky yesterday & saw single birds at 2 sites.
One realy surprised us, it was on the moorland edge at 330m/asl, flying over open country between stands of trees:-

The other was at a regular site nr Durham City, where birds feed on reclaimed pit heaps & there plentiful ant supply:-

There are several "sites" in the well known Gateshead area which hold Green Wood, i suppose the Thornley woodlands staff would be best placed to advise you...?

Plenty time for them yet.

15, Very nice. It did seem to be a good season down here.

Hopefully you'll get your Green Woodpecker there while you're waiting.....

The most reliable place I have found for Green Woodpeckers is my local cemetery, perhaps you should try yours, envy you the Waxwing I have still to see one of those.
