I'm thinking of buying the other half some Opticron Imagic BGA 8x32 (old style, £180 from WE) for Christmas.

Requirements are lightweight, good for spectacles, good fov, good close focus, extremes of viewing conditions unlikely....

Any opinions on the quality of the Opticrons, or are there any others to consider (can't afford to spend any more money though)?

Thanks. |=)|

I'd give serious consideration to the Nikon 8x36 Sporter (back in stock at WE for £99). They're quite light, excellent if you wear glasses, with good fov and close focus. They're also well sealed and have good water resistance (although not truly waterproof). A real bargain I think.

Yes thanks, I'd wondered about them, having seen numerous good things written about them.

They're about 105g heavier, not as close focus and as large a field of view...but they're £80 cheaper.

Has anyone looked through both?

the Nikons are an excellent buy as are the Opticrons. I compared the Nikon's to the the Opticron 8x42 Verano's 3 years back and preferred the Verano's optically. The bins you are looking at are Imagic BGA's NOT BGA's (the BGA's are the next model up from the Imagic BGA don't you love Opticron naming standards) and the Imagic's are a model up from the verano's. At RRP they are approx £80-£100 dearer than the Nikons.

Personally I'd go for the Opticron's but your £80
