Help

I have just started using the Canon software (Zoom Browser EX) which came with my EOS1D Mark II N. In the field, I use a portable hard disc to download my images onto and reuse the card (compact flash) after wiping.

I only shoot in RAW. I found yesterday, that the Canon software has recorded the images I stored on the portable disc as .CR2 files and I cannot get the software to convert the RAW files. When I try to process the RAW files, I get no further.

Can anyone tell me how to get the .CR2 files to be viewed as RAW?

Apoloogies for cross posting

Thanks,

Kevin

A .CR2 file is a raw file. Maybe you have an old version of the software. The current version (which you should have got with the camera) should read them no problem. So should various other applications, from Photoshop on down.

Oh, I just thought of something. Does Zoom Browser read raw files? Or only jpegs? You may need to use Digital Photo Professional instead (which should also have shipped in the box with your camera). (Please excuse me being vague, I don't actually use either package.)

Early versions of Zoombrowser didn't support raw files but the latest version which can be downloaded from Canon's website does.

A program which I would recommend for raw conversion is RawShooter from:
http://www.pixmantec.com
Their basic package, RawShooter essentials, is available free.

Hi I've tried Zoom Browser EX (I have the correct software, since Ih ave converted RAW files when uploaded direct in a card reader). I have also tried Digital Professional Photo - I get a black thumbnail and in both programs am unable to view the RAW image.

I'm not sure whether you have a software or hardware issue here. It might be worth checking you have the latest version of ZoomBrowser. Mine is EX 5.2

When I started using my 20D with Zoombrowser I found that it worked with a card reader for downloading jpegs but wouldn't work when connected directly to my camera.

The only other option I can think of is to transfer the files from your portable disk onto your pc hard drive and try accessing the files from there.

Thanks. I've tried sopying and pasting the images from the portable hard disc to the PC. I can see the thumbnail of the image, but when I click on 'edit' for RAW conversion, it tells me it can;t convert RAW images. Interestingly, when I tried Capture one, I was able to see the RAW images, but the colours on all had gone blue. I am beginning to wonder if there is a problem with the software for my Vosonic 80Gb Xs Drive super - there's no proble, with Nikon RAW images, but I wonder if the software accepts Canon RAW info. ANy ideas? (By the way, I have version 5.5 of Zoom Browser).

Birder, does Zoom Browser display your RAW files, but not process them, or does it not display them at all?

I use Zoom Browser EX to process the RAW files from my Canon S60 without problems. However these files come out of my camera as a .CRW with an associated .THM which contains, among other things, the EXIF data relating to .CRW.

Zoom Browser displays each thumbnail with a little "RAW" label above it.

_________

Oops, there have been further developments while I was writing the above.

Perhaps you are missing the .THM files (or whatever the latest eqivalent might be). At least with my version of Zoom Browser, both the .CRW and .THM file must be present to be able to do the RAW processing and conversion.

Hi John, Thanks for that.

Where do I find out if I havce these files (.THM)?

I've e-mailed Vosonic in case I need an update from them, since the problem only seems to be with images stored on my portable hard disc. In ZXoom Browser I can see the thumbnail image with RAW in the top left and vbelow the image is the image number followed by .CR2

I do not understand why I can;t process it!

I wonder whether you need a firmware update for the drive. They are available here:

I use a card reader on the computer to copy the files off the CF card (much quicker than the camera software and USB). The .THM files are in the same directory on the card as the .CRW files so everything comes across together.

Is it possible that they have been put in a separate directory on your hard disk? (Assuming that a .CR2 file needs a .THM file to accompany it. It doesn't seem unreasonable to imagine that Canon may have combined the .CRW and .THM and called the result .CR2.)

Just had another thought - have you checked to see if the .CR2 files are set to Read Only? It's just possible that might upset Zoom Browser (even though you can't edit a RAW file).

Hi John

My files do not appear to be READ ONLY (BOX NOT TICKED). I will try a Vosonic firmware update and try to find .THM and .CRW files.

Cheers,

Kevin

Kevin,

Having just re-read your previous post, something else occurred to me: You mentioned trying to "Edit" to do the RAW conversion. On my version of Zoom Browser (4.6) the menu option Edit > Edit Image... results in a few seconds of the "busy" cursor and then nothing. The correct menu option on my ZB is Tools > Process RAW Images...

Obviously your much newer version of Zoom Browser may have a quite different menu set-up, but I thought it worth mentioning just in case.

Hi there.

I think I've narrowed the problem down to the Sandisk Ultra Extreme III compact flash card that I recently bought. Don;t think my (excellent) Vosonic VP 6210 portable hard disc is compatible with this disc. I have sen the following to Vosonic to see if they can offer any help. If you (or anyone else) can help in the meantime I would be very grateful indeed. Kevin

"
Hello. I have a Vosonic XS VP6210 which I bought from you about a year ago. Excellent product. Wouldn’t be without it. I use it only for storing digital images when on holiday etc.

I have recently had a problem, however. I use a Canon EOS 1D Mark II N camera, shooting RAW files.

I normally use Sandisk Compact Flash Ultra II cards (1 Gb). No problem with these. However, I just bought a Sandisk Extreme III card, 1Gb and although I can download from the card to the Vosonic in the normal way, and then upload from the Vosonic to my PC, when I come to manipulate my RAW images in the Canon software it will not allow me to do so. I can see the thumbnails of the RAW images, but can’t get any further. I do not have this problem with the Sandisk Ultra II cards.

I also have no problem when I upload images directly from both Sandisk cards to the PC.

This leads me to believe the problem lies in the Vosonic reading of the Ultra Extreme III card. Is this the case? Is there a download ‘fix’ for this problem?

Any help much appreciated. Thank you."

Kevin
