Any more experienced birders got any advice for seeing birds in sarf east London? Eg. in Greenwich Park, or the Greenwich Ecology Centre?
I saw a nuthatch in Greenwich Park once by the Observatory Garden and somebody told me they'd seen a bullfinch by a clump of sliver birches. Are these to be seen around still? And I think there are goldcrests in the park though I've never seen them there.
Anyone know somewhere good to see goldfinches?

Hi Simon,
There are definitely goldcrests in Greenwich Park. The fenced off "no ball games" bit is good for them, often in coniferous trees and I usually first hear their high pitched calls. Nuthatches there too as well as coal tits and G.S. woodpeckers. It's worth looking at thrush flocks at this time of year. Greenwich Park is good for redwing & sometimes fieldfare. Last year I saw a couple of waxwings in G.P. but that would be on a lucky day. It's a big area with varied habitat so all sorts of things might turn up.
Goldfinches feed on small seeds such as thistle, teazel etc. so a good place to see them would be somewhere a bit overgrown. They turn up in my back garden quite a lot but try somewhere like Brockley Cemetery; there is a good chance of finding a flock there if you wait around a while.

Haven't been there for a while, but I used to see Goldfinches regularly along the Thames path adjacent to the Dome. Possibility of Black Redstart there too.
