Today I heard a Chiff Chaff in one of the villages around Northans. Also saw about 10 gold finches eating the seeds from some fennel plants. And the Village resident Peacock had some cake crumbs.

Later in the garden back home. I made some poridge with water. That was loved by all. I had 7 Blackbirds at the same time. About 4 Caffinches 6 Greenfinches and Starlings coming and going. And about 10 House sparrows on the bird table. They all love the pond we made last spring.

We've had a few chiffchaffs down here in Cornwall as well, but I don't think it's uncommon to get them here in the winter.

Willowa have you seen any of the reintroduced Red Kites on your travels in Northants?

I travel from here in Peterborough on a regular basis to enjoy the Kites coming into roost in the winter and their breeding displays in the spring.

All the best for 2006.

Driving up the M1 two days ago had superb views of a Red Kite just to the west of the motorway around the Northampton junction. That afternoon in Leicester (Fleckney) heard Blackcap singing at approx 4 in afternoon as the light was fading. Then last night at 2.30 walking home from a friends (here in Brighton) heard two blackcaps singing. Never seen or heard 'em before in the winter.

Chiffchaff and blackcap are becoming more common as over-wintering birds, so hearing them at this time of year is always a possibility.

The further south you are, the more likely it is - it'd be a shock to me!

Just after Christmas I saw 6 Red Kites together at Fermyn Woods Country Park south of Corby. The Rockingham Forest area is their stronghold in Northants. Another good site to look is at Blatherwycke Lake to the north of Corby.

Myself and another member of this forum have had blackcaps in mid December. We both live on the North coast of Scotland. It was certainly a shock for me.
