I have now got Great Tits building a nest in my nestbox. Ive seen them this morning and I think what they are doing is getting twigs from my tree beside it cus I see one come out and fly to the tree then I wait for a bit then comes back and through the hole again. But im really :king: happy that my nestbox has been taken makes me want to look out the window and watch them LOL but I can't ive got to go to Vane Farm later

Euan,
I have black capped chickadees nesting in a bird house here. They have been building the nest up lately but no sign of eggs yet. I check it everyday and something looks different every time so I know it's being used regularly. They used this one last year too.

So far this year Blackbirds have fledged 2 chicks and Robin a solitary chick (don't know what happened to the rest? but before everyone blames Magpies-we have never had one in the garden) and both House Sparrow nests have hatched chicks - don't know how many. The Wren's nest is so well hidden that I can't find it even though I know it's there. Also got collared doves in the boundary hedge between us and next door so I'm not sure who's side they are on!

Hi Euan, Nick,
I've had Collared Doves trying to nest in my garden for the last 3 months, but the Magpies always get them, every attempt . . :-((

I have Carolina chickadees nesting in a ceramic birdhouse hanging on my patio. The eggs have recently hatched, and every time one of the parents goes into the house, I can hear the loud cheeping of the baby birds. When I venture out onto the patio one (or both) of the parents will perch nearby and berate me loudly, often fluttering its wings at me.
The only shame is, I'm pretty sure, just guessing by the timing of when they were hatched, when they begin to fledge I will probably be out of town on business.

I've an old shed needing tearing down (kids safety) but, I've a pair of pied wagtails nesting so that job is postponed till the autumn, I've a new shed waiting to be built so I'll be adding a couple of nest boxes to it in the hopes of giving them nesting sites
I've just had a casualty the other day of a young thrush, poor thing hit the window. I see the Blackbirds scrounging for food and with beakfuls of squirmy food so he's got a nest somewhere

I just put a nest box up about 4 days ago(yeah I know I am kinda late) and house wren has already called it home. I was shocked when i opened it yesterday and saw all the sticks in it.
Good Birding,

Mallard with thirteen eggs (twelve hatched successfully) at work of all places! She laid them under a wooden walkway by the ornamental pond (wish I had taken a picture now). She took them onto the pond where all the customers went aawwww! (including me) and finally trooped off with them up to the more natural pond at the far end of the garden centre (away from the public)
Pied Wagtail nesting in the Geraniums, Chaffinch nesting in a clipped topiary bush, and House Sparrows nesting in, well nest boxes of all places. Oh and there's the Blackbird in the Privet hedge also.
All of this at work too.

I just got back from a week-long business trip, and as I expected, the chickadees that hatched out on the patio fledged while I was away and are now gone. I'm really sad that I missed my chance to see them emerge.
On a more happy note, a mallard is sitting on a nest of four eggs on the grassy median strip right in the middle of the entrance to our apartment complex--cars pass her on one side entering, and on the other leaving. Several people living here have taken food and water out to her, and she seems perfectly content there.

Mockingbirds just getting out of the nest. I do love to watch them as they are learning the ropes. We also have doves making a nest yesterday and today - they are using the mulch (pine straw) in my flower beds - gathering one piece at a time.
The mockingbirds nested in a large azalea bush under an oak tree in the front yard. Now, the doves are making their nest in the oak, right above the azalea bush. I'm glad they feel safe here.
