That must have been exciting to see, Steve! I've only seen a Golden Eagle once in my life, in California in 1994. They are pretty unusual in my part of the world.
Reminds me of little birds mobbing raptors: I was birding a few years ago at a restored wetlands area about 50 miles south of home. As I walked along the fenceline on the north edge of the property, I was startled by a Red-Tailed Hawk flushing out of the trees and shrubbery, and being chased by 6-8 small sparrows. The hawk flew just a few feet from me, wheeling past, and so close that I could see one small sparrow land on the hawk's nape and peck him on the head!!
I guess when something's on YOUR turf, you'll do anything!!
