Staying in Haltwhistle, where would you go?

as title says, got a week later this year (August), family holiday so on a promise I wont be birding 24/7 :-O

do plan to fit in one days birding while wife & daughter do the shopping thing so if anyone has any suggestions on where best to head for would be very grateful, not after any specific birds just looking for a good days walking with a few different habitats :t:

we all want to see Red Squirrel which I gather are fairly common but if there are any particularly good spots would be nice to know in advance.

Can I ask whereabouts in Haltwhistle? I'm only a couple of miles away and can probably be of assistance or offer advice. If you've not visited this area your in for a treat.

have been to Hexham but was a looooong time ago. Ideally wont need to be too far away as I will probably be dropped off.
