having got myself a 80-200 f2.8 afd ed lens, I am at a loss as to which converter to get, would a 2x or 1.4x be best?

I have managed to try out an old 2x converter, but it has no af function(as its an old manual ai one) so I have to focus manually and I have not so much got one sharp shot at full mag.

also by my reckoning the 200mm lens is a 300mm equivelent on my d70 so a 2x converter should make it a 600mm poss f5.6.
is anyone using this lens with converters who can advise.

thanks

paul

Hi Paul. You want a Nikon TC14E or a TC14E II. They are optically and mechanically identical so either will work and you will retain the AF-S autofocus. I can't really recommend the TC17E or TC20E (I've tried both) as highly with a zoom lens as you will start to have noticeable image deterioration. The 1.4 on your zoom lens is about as far as you can go and still get a truly first rate result.

thanks angelo,I'm leaning towards the 1.4x converter.

Paul: to add to the helpful advice already given, you might not know about www.nikonlinks.com which is useful for reviews. Bjorn Rorslett and Thom Hogan should give useful information.

I don't think you can use the most recent AF teleconverters as there is a coupling lug that prevents mounting on all but the most recent lenses and I think yours is too old. Check the links to make sure. It depends on the lens model. But you can file off the lug - eeek - and then it will work. I think you will get metering but I'm not sure about AF. I suspect it only gives AF with AFS lenses.

You could probably use the Tamron and Sigma AF TCs, but they are said to be not as good optically speaking as the Nikon ones.

I'm afraid this lens will not work with the TC-14,17,20, as it is not AFS.
The Tamron SP or the Kenko Pro 300 series teleconverters will do. Sigma's TCs will not work probably.
There's a very little optical difference between Nikon's TCs and the clones, but there's a big price difference and a difference in build quality. I have both Nikon TCs and the Tamron/Kenko TCs, I use the Nikons for the long AFS lenses and the other for the rest of my lenses.
I'd suggest to start with a X1.4 TC as this lens is quite a slow focuser.

I've got a Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 ED lens and use a 2x Jessops converter bought on Ebay - not bad results - AF speed not too bad considering.

I'm on record as having been really impressed with some of Greypoint's pictures with the Jessops convertor - waaay better than I would have expected.
