Dear Nikon fans,

my question concerns a choice of a flash gun. Which one would be better for bird photography - sb800 or sb600?

On the one hand, more power of sb800 seems to be better for longer distances, on the other hand, would not be the light of a more powerful sb800 disturbing for birds? Whether it is possible to regulate/reduce the light/power of the flash manually, especially at short distances? I use Nikon CP8800. Thank you.

Best regards,
welly

The flash only fires with as much power as is necessary for the situation, so no it won't be too powerful and more likely to scare the birds.

I'd say if money isn't a factor in your decision always go for the better equipment, the SB-800. It's certainly going to be more effective when you are at the edge of it's range then the SB-600 since it's more powerful, which could be a big plus in using it as a fill flash in birding. Since the flash metering system is so much more advanced and faster then doing it manually I doubt you'll ever want to switch either flash to manual mode and control the output yourself.
