Hi All

I am new to this excellent forum and have a query which I would be grateful for help with.

I have recently purchased a Canon 100-400 IS L and I have a Sigma 1.4x Teleconverter (DG). I have heard that these are compatible but Sigma tell me the official answer is that they are not!

This is probably the most expensive lens I will ever buy (unless I win the lottery) so I would not like to break it!!

Has anybody actually used this combination?

Best regards
Shady

Hi Shady

Welcome to Birdforum. I'm afraid I don't the answer to your query but I'm sure someone will.

I want the 100-400 IS lens but haven't saved up enough yet!

I've never heard of 3rd party TCs damaging Canon lenses. Only that the electronics didn't work, thereby disabling autofocus and exposure control.

I've used third party tc's with my canon 70-300. I must revert to manual focus but have never had any issues with the lens when used without the tc. It continues to perform flawlessly.

The Sigma tc can cause problems with zoom lenses - it has a protruding front element that can make contact with the back end of a zoom lens, so I'd recommend that you check this carefully before trying it out. It may cause damage to the convertor, or even worse, the lens.

Either a Canon or Kenko 1.4x tc should work fine with this lens, but you will not get AF with any of them unless you're using it on a 1D body!

I have used the sigma 2x convertor with the canon 100-400L lens with no problem, so assume same would be true of the 1.4x tc.

The Sigma TC sticks out only a fraction of the canon one.

I have the 300D and have used the Tamron 1.4x teleconverter with my Canon 75-300 IS lens with full auto-focus. I have also used it in conjunction with the Tamron 200-400 and have full automation.
