Hi,
Am off to lake Hornborga in central sweden in the middle of March with the girlfriend's family. Unfortunately, it would appear that I am going a little too early for the cranes but I was wondering if anybody had any information on other species of interest which I may be able to pick up whilst there (maybe nutcracker, woodpeckers etc???).
Many thanks in anticipation.
Cheers

Hi Matt,
Iam not Swedish so my knowledge is rather limited, I visited Sweden many years ago, three weeks in June 1987, mainly becuase of the impressive eagles, falcons and hawks they have there.
I mostly birded around a lake called Vanern and in the northern parts of the country, but I spend two days birding around north and west Hornborga , Sweden is probably among the best places in northern Europe for many kind of ducks, bird of prey (among the largest European populations of Osprey) and many different kind of wadding species
Myself saw around 100 species during just two days, such as:
Marsh harrier, Black-throated loon, Black-necked grebe (highlight), Bittern, Hazel grouse, Spotted crake, Tawny owl, Pygmy owl, Short-eared owl, Penduline tit and Osprey
But Iam sure that some Swede have a much better knowledge about the areas as I think its among the most famous bird localities in northern Europe

I've only been in Winter but saw Grosbeaks and Two-barred crossbills galore. Look around the Semi urban areas for Grosbeaks and Waxwings. I don't think it has been such a great year for them as when I went. Saw WT Eagle and Rough leg quite easily in the countryside.
