I'm going to be in Madrid for a week from the 8th March . I would appreciate any info on good places to visit withing an hour or so of the city. I anyone could show me around that would be even better. Neil.

If I was you, I would go just a little further by train or bus to Segovia, maybe 80km north of Madrid. I was there in Oct. a few years ago. Highlights included both griffon and black vultures over the centre of the old city, several red kites and a communal chough roost a few hundred strong on the cathedral. The train does have stops in the sierra on the way, which might allow some mountain birds to be seen. Good luck!
