I too have the Kowa 823 and it travels with me as hand luggage, the tripod goes in the case in the hold. You will have all sorts of problems with security if you try to carry your tripod as handluggage. The scope gets wrapped in a couple of layers bubble wrap held in place with rubber bands. The eyepieces are in my waistcoat pocket along with all my coinage and keys etc. When it comes to the security checks the waistcoat goes through the x ray machine and i can walk through the portal without setting off the alarms (as I once did due to too many euros in my trouser pocket.)

I started a similar thread about a year ago - had a job to find it but here it is

When we have travelled by plane I put the tripod in my (large) haversack and the scope goes (well wrapped) in hand luggage.
The eyepieces were in my camera bag.
Not had a problem - just tell security that there is a scope in the bag before it goes through. Sometimes they open the bag up to have a look.

In these here parts of the world, you ar no longer able to carry the tripod as hand luggage. But the Scope certainly stays with me.

As others have said, my scope stays with me as hand baggage along with bins and camera. My trypod gets well wrapped in clothes and goes in the suit case. I've had no problems up to now, touch wood!!
