I'd like to start recording birdsong with my HDMinidisc recorder. It has a line input for both analogue and digital, but no mic input. I've read a lot of the info about mics on this forum. Won't I also need a preamp to make this work through the line input? Any suggestions of a compact setup?

Hi Tua,
Yes, you do need a mic preamp to record through the line input. I have no personal experience, but something like this http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-PREAMP should work. Unfortunately this combination becomes easily more expensive than a HiMD-player with a built in mic-input.

Might be a cheaper option to look on ebay for a used MD which does have a mic input. Although MD recorders had a bad rap for having noisy mic stages, which is why people used to recommend outboard preamps, Sony's HiMD line like the MZ-NH700 I tested are quiet enough that they don't compromise capacitor mics up to stuff like the Sennheiser MKH40 which is way better that what most people will use
