Hi All
Dont know if its the right forum to post in but im a newbie and have a little story.
Not being an avid bird watcher, and out twitching on the weekends but my wife and i both watch there antics from our bedroom in the mornings from the the regular flock of seagulls and the crows seeing them off ocasionally to the woodpeckers and thrushes.
from our breakfast table in the extension we watch the morning crowd feeding. and have a wide range from indian ringnecks to a goldcrest
Its from here the strange pair arrive. cant say i know all breeds but i recognise most UK birds, these two have me stumped.
i have nicknamed them Sparrobins, by the looks there is one pair
there build/shape and beak look like a robin, only they have a purpleish tinge to there breast.
legs shorter than a standard robin
on there backs there wings are flecked like a sparrow
any clues would be appreciated.
would love to get a pic but there a bit quick and i dont think my digi would be capable of getting a close up.

Hi bsw, welcome to Birdforum, from all of the moderators and staff here.

Sounds like Dunnock (Hedge Sparrow) to me too - they have a habit of giving little wing flicks - I think it's a type of semaphore ;)

Cheers,

Andy.

Hi BSW (from a fellow Surrey-ite)

One of the facilities on Birdforum is the bird database - you could always have a look at Dunnock or other candidates on there and see if you can find a match.... Or there are also the photo galleries which can be searched as well...

Hope you get your problem solved anyway...

All the best.... Ruby

Hi All
thanks for the replies
had a look in the database, presumed this was alphabetical as its listed like that
couldnt find any listing for dunnock, hedge sparrow
if your answers have been for an ordinary brown sparrow, this birds smaller than a sparrow, virtually the same size as the robins
many thanks

HI,

Welcome to Birdforum.

The Dunnock is also known as Hedge Accentor (Prunella modularis)

Here is a link to the database picture http://www.birdforum.net/bird_view.php?bid=4010
if you click on the other images of this we have quite a lot more pages of them.

The only other ones would be something like a Linnet or Redpoll
