I see that the 'pagers' are not bothering with any more Painted Lady reports unless they're exceptional numbers. It could very well be another big 'Painted Lady year.' I haven't seen many yet, but what I have noticed is a lot of Silver Y moths - although this is a common species I seem to remember there were huge numbers of them in the last really big Painted Lady year - I think it was 1996.

Why is it that painted ladies in this country seem to settle with thier wings upright, but in Madeira seem to settle with them spread. Is it something to do with the sunlight/warmth?

While in southern Spain the first two weeks of May we saw vast numbers of both Painted ladies and Silver Y moths migrating north. This included both flying in off the sea at Tarifa. Anywhere you went you could tell which way was north by looking which way the Painted Ladies were flying. We failed to do any proper counts but we saw up to 10 a minute passing.
