We are off to Germany on Friday for 10 days to visit my son who lives in Leipzig.

We will be spending some days in Saechsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland) - an area of hills and forests on the river Elbe near the Czech border.

Has anyone any experience of this area? Are there any good birding sites or particular birds I should look out for?

Thanks,

Hi Robinm
I just found the thread when I searched for Leipzig.
I hope you enjoyed Saechsische Schweiz. Itīs a great place for Peregrines. I know a few traditional breeding sites. The other specials are Phylloscopus trochiloides. I donīt know the English name. There was a breeding site near the entrance of the Kirnitzschtal. Dipper is fine in the Polenztal as well as Grey Wagtail. Saechsische Schweiz is also a place for the Eagle Owl and the Eurasian Pygmy owl (rare), but I donīt know where they are to be found. The greatest birding man in the Saechsische Schweiz is Ulrich Aust from Sebnitz. He is affiliated with National Park Management. He would know everything about birds, although maybe he would not make public the most secret nesting sites such as that of the black storks. He is also professional with almost all other wildlife, he would know even the tyniest creatures and rare plants in Saechsische Schweiz.

Good birding
Edwin

Thanks. I am sure we will be going back it is a very beautiful area.

Phylloscopus trochiloides is Greenish Warbler in English. Recently my son was there and saw Black Woodpecker - a bird I have yet to see.

Cheers,

Cheers,

Black Woodpecker is not too difficult to find. I saw quite a few in Brandenburg. They like old pine forest.

Cheers
