...I've been saving my pennies and now want to buy a 'decent' lens....

I'm split between a S/H (MINT) Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO MACRO (with TC1.4)

OR - a brand NEW Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3

would the Sigma prime be better/sharper/faster ???

The Sigma might have little or no AF if you put a T-Con behind it, because it is f/5.6(you will lose 1 f/stop). I could be wrong. Prime lenses do work better with T-Cons, but the Sigma would be alot better without the T-Con than the Tamron would be though. But I don't think that you would get as good of results with the Simga + T-Con, as you would the Tamron by itsself. You will have more focal length with the Sigma + T-Con, but less light(and probably searching AF).

Go with whichever you feel most comfortable with as well. If you don't like heavy lenses, then you will probably be better off with the Tamron.
