I've been using my Canon A40 (2Mp) in conjunction with a Swaro 80 scope & DCB adapter for a couple of years now with good results. However, the 2Mp A40 severely restricts any "blowups" I can make on the computer before pixelisation occurs. Consequently I am now considering upgrading my camera and am currently considering a Sony DSC- N1. My reasons for looking at the Sony are:

a. the lens has a zoom range of 38mm to 114mm the same as the fabled Canon A95 and near to my current A40(35mm to 105mm).
b. 3X Zoom.
c. Has an extremely large high defination screen 3" and 230,000 pixels. Good for tired old eyes!
d. 8mp CCD for better "blowups".
e. Is small and compact.

I would appreciate anyone's experiences with the camera used for digiscoping
and any comments as to its suitability. Many thanks DAS

Hello, Das.

I use a DSC-N1 for digiscoping. The screen resolution is quite good, and helps a lot focusing. There are two drawbacks you have to know: Image noise is high above ISO 80. Lens apperture is too small above 2x, so the image gets too dark.

Both things can be fixed, because you can select iso sensitivity manualy, and it doesn't have vignetting above 1'7x aprox. (with my Zeiss Diascope 85 and zoom eyepiece).

Image quality is good, battery life is amazing (considering its huge screen), and the screen can be seen even down direct sunlight.

Hope this helps.

Best regards.
