Could anyone help to identify this moth? perhaps Colinj who is so knowledgeable on the subject has the answer?

It is one of many that would be well concealed among tree barks.

Thanks to you both. Now when I look up Angle shades in my Butterflies and Moths book, I CAN find it's picture but couldn't before?

Yes I can concur. The larva enjoys Geraniums & can be found all year. My earliest Larva was found on Sea Radish on January 12th 2000. I took it home & reared it out as the adult.
