dmc-fz1 or c750 UZ?

Hi everybody,
I want to buy my first digicam and it I want to buy one of this cameras. Who can tell me, which camera will take the better pictures? Panasonics image stabilization is very nice, but i heard that den oly will take the better pictures (They sould be sharper!). I wanted to buy the dmc, but than i saw some pictures and they were worse than those from the pentax optio s!

Welcome Karem to the huge and it seems fast growing Bird Forum site. Your post probably belongs in the forum below where a moderator will probably move it after welcoming you (I'm sort of relieved to find that our superb moderators do occasionally get SOME sleep. I was starting to worry...)

There you will find threads on both these cameras. One Bird Forum member is due to be delivered an Olympus C750 this month (I understand it is a very new model).

If you go to the gallery, and type in the words "panasonic" or "c700" "c720" or "c730" you will find pictures taken with these cameras. Be as rude as you like about the two taken with the Panasonic: they were pretty much my first efforts with a digital camera ;)

Your really comparing apples to oranges here, the fz1 is a 2mp camera and the oly is a 4mp i believe. I personally have no experience with panasonic cameras, but my oly i owned took excellent pics. I say go with the oly. buy the oly tcon-17 and that should give you 17x magnification with the c750.

I'm sure your advice is good, Paulyoly, but I guess we'd also agree that Karem probably ought to do a fair bit of research if at all possible. I know I would if I felt I needed to know for eg. whether or not the person I was addressing had biceps like melons or hair like a kiwi fruit ;)

I was wondering if you have or are looking at achieving a camera/lens combination in the magnification range you state? Seem to be a lot of members doing so right now and unfortunately relevant info seems to have got very dispersed (not fault of administrators, of course).

My 2 cents worth:

If 12X is sufficient for your needs and you want the camera to automatically make most of the settings decisions for you and you don't need add-on lenses, then the Panasonic is the way to go.

Otherwise, the C750 is a better choice.

The only real advantage the Panasonic has is Optical Image Stabilisation. If you intend to shoot at high powers using a tripod, then OIS is a non issue (i.e. should not be used when camera is stationary).

Just a quick note Karem. You should be made aware of potential problems with both cameras. Some people have raised questions about Olympus after sales service :

With the Panasonic, on the other hand, there seem to be problems currently with distribution; specifically I understand people are having problems obtaining spare batteries (which are also expensive). I hope to put more on this in the Panasonic thread.

If your asking me if i am looking for a camera/lens combo the answer is no. I get great pics almost every time with my spotting scope and the macro on the cp990. Why mess with a good thing. I had a fuji s602 with the Oly b-300, but it couldn't give me the detail that the scope and nikon give, but it was much more convenient and portable. After quite a bit of practice i'm actually just a fast with the scope as i was with the fuji, but i do miss the almost instant autofocus that the fuji provided. Man i wish nikon would get the head out of their a$$ and make a camera with a fast autofocus that could save images as fast as my fuji could, i would get much more good shots. The cp990 is so slow in those gategories.

Thanks for the comments about the bluebirds, i've been looking for them everyday, i think i heard them again, but haven't seen them. I haven't seen a bluebird in 20 years.

Thanks Paulyoly; interesting. Maybe a nostalgic yearning for hand-held photography is just a stage all digiscopers go through ;) (hope you're the only one reading this...) I can see you're more than busy enough with your current setup and finding very photogenic subjects (I think I recall a great shot of a dragonfly of yours in the gallery).

I think it's interesting to see what the same guy (I'm referring to Tyler Allred) achieves with digiscoping setups as against a Nikon D100 (all superb IMHO). There are some new photos of killdeer and action shots of gulls taken with a Nikon D100 and 80-400mm VR lens.

Wonder if a moderator is going to step in on us here. Sorry Karem. We're waiting for you to bring us back into line...

Karem, I must have missed your first post, as did all the other moderators as well. I had so many threads to read through when I returned from holiday that it must have disappeared from my list as I was trying to catch up.

On behalf of all the moderators and admin let me extend a belated welcome to Bird Forum. I'm sure you'll get your question answered by one of the many knowledgable members on the forum. You'll find plenty to interest you here and you'll certainly learn a lot about all things birding.

I checked that link I mentioned above and found another 29 posts on it this morning (sound familiar Diane?). Now here's where I get back on thread. One of these new posts has a chap's opinion of the Panasonic. I'll put a link in the new "Discuss Cameras/Panasonic" forum.

From what others have said, it looks increasingly as though the Olympus would give better results and be more versatile as long as you are prepared to invest that extra effort to master it.
