Hi all,
I'm keen to computerise my life list (and other lists in general), does anybody know if there is any decent software out there for this purpose. I've been birding for 25 years now and have travelled quite a bit since I became a working man and have amassed a life list somewhere in the region of 1520+. Before I start pounding the keyboard in excel it would be nice to know if i can download or buy software to save me all that effort. I'm keen to attempt to get down all subspecies as well as in this day and age I think they have become more important to acknowledge.

Cheers, hope someone can advise.

Mark,

There are several such products on the market. One that I use and this is popular in the US is Avisys:

http://www.avisys.net/

Dedicated listing software has several advantages over using a generic spreadsheet or word processing app. The programs include a list of all of the world's species so it's point and click, no need to type names. They also offer hierarchical locations, so if you see a lifer in your local patch, a single entry updates your world, UK, county and local patch lists. Some programs, including Avisys, can print checklists for every country in the world (if you purchase the optional add-on). I have no financial interest in Avisys. Glen

Take a look at http://www.birdsoftware.co.uk. Some RSPB reserves stock this or you can order it direct.

There is also a more expensive one, but I don't remember the name of it. Someone else may know it. They usually have a stand at the Rutland Bird Fair, which is coming up soon.

I use the BirdLog that is integrated into the BirdGuides CD-ROM. It's basic but it works for me.

Yeah, sure! Looks great, until you see the price tag.

Is there anything AFFORDABLE out there?!

Not as far as I'm aware.

I saw one produced in the US that was almost £100. Admittedly it had a huge database of species, but it was a bit out of my range. £30 I could cope with, if I needed to get one of these products.

Hi Diane,

Of course my comment referred to the very expensive one Glen posted info on - the birdsoftware co uk one is more reasonable.

But what would be nice was if they did a cheapo knock-down version without the 100 photos (which I have no real need for), for say £20 WPal £25 World.

Michael,

That one is very pricey for what appears to be the product of someone just learning Visual Basic! The one I saw at least had some fancy interface.

Thanks for the URLs from me too, I've been looking for something like this. I'm tired of erasing old species and penning in new species.

If you have M$ Access then why not try my birding database, it's not as sophisticated as those you pay for but it's free.

http://up.to/brandon and go to Jeff's birding database.
