Hello, rednineball. On behalf of all Moderators and Admin, let me offer you a warm welcome to Bird Forum. You should find plenty to entertain and educate you here and I'm sure you will find everyone very friendly and helpful.

To answer your question - I have just 'upgraded' to the G3 from the Coolpix 995. I just wasn't getting on with the 995 at all, despite it being the 'digiscoping camera of choice' at the time. In its favour is the fact that it has adapters available to fit it to the scope and other cameras are not served so well, including the G3.

If you look at my gallery photos and change the sort view to 'latest', the more recent ones have been taken with the G3. The Ospreys I am particularly happy with. I apperar to be getting more 'keepers' with the G3 than I ever did with the 995. To be honest, I think I had a duff camera - it just struggled constantly to focus and then gave a completely blurred image. Occasionally (very) one would turn out OK.

I have had to do a bit of a DIY job for the adapter using some plastic plumbing joint, and you have to purchase a lens thread adapter tube (either Canon's own or a better one from a company in the US called Lensmate, which is where I got mine from), as the camera itself does not have a lens thread to screw any adapters on. This tube is long enough to take into account the external zoom length of this camera. Otherwise, when you zoom out, the lens would crash into the scope eyepiece.

I am finding it very easy to use as my home-made adapter does not need any screwing on - it just grips the eyepiece of the scope
and is very easy to attach and remove. This may not be the case with every eyepiece though. It just happened that the plumbing joint fits over mine exactly and the rubber ring inside grips it securely.

I will be posting a review with some photos and a description of the set up in a few days time, as I have been asked about this adapter by a few people. I need the help of my sister and her digicam to take a photo of the complete setup, as I only have the one camera. Got rid of the 995 as soon as I bought the G3.

Hi Diane thank you so much for your reply, yes I am new on here, my hubby is the one interested in this, we both love our garden birds and visiting places of this nature. He is now going with the Nikon Coolpix 4500, there is so much info about I think his mind is boggled by it all.Cheers :t:
