Well, I got my Tamron 70-300 lens today, and while it is very nice, I can already see that I'm way under powered.

I've read all sorts of threads on this subject, but I hope to get some more input on a lens bigger than the Tamron I have...

Thanks all.

Kevin

Honestly Kevin, you'll get no new insights on this thread - you're asking the same question, for the same reasons, that everyone else has asked it.

Frankly, individual recommendations - or condemnations - of lenses are pretty irrelevant.

Get into the gallery, use the search facility, and hunt out example images from the camera/lens combos you're interested in.

You can continue with Tamron to the next level - the 200-500mm lens. A lot of users are happy with it.

Here are some lenses that I'm looking at
Tamron... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7627513164&fromMakeTrack=true

Sigma... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7626913846&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
Opteka 500mm...and this cheaper lens is where I really need to know something about. I'm sure it is not for me because it is to cheap to be true, but I'll ask why anyway! http://cgi.ebay.com/500mm-HD-Mirror-Lens-for-Nikon-D70s-D70-D50-D100-D2H_W0QQitemZ7627525145QQihZ017QQcategoryZ3343QQrd Z1QQcmdZViewItem

I'm leaving on a month long vacation this Friday, so I'm making up my mind this weekend. Hopefully with good advice!

Thanks, Kevin

The Opteka is a mirror lens. I wouldn't buy one. They typically come with funky AF and small apertures.

Go for that Tamron 200-500, it's a great lens.

Well, I can't have every lens out there, and it appears that of the lenses that I'm looking at in my price range THEY all seem to get pretty good reviews here and elsewhere. I'm picking the Sigma 170-500 because I'll get the extra reach, and it is a bit cheaper than the Tamron 200-500.

So, unless I hear otherwise, I'll be putting a fast shipment request in tomorrow!

Thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin. As I have just bought a Sigma 170-500 I was wondering how you are getting on with yours. Are you pleased with the results or do you now wish you had bought a different lense. Roger
