Anyone got any idea what a mint condition nikon F55 with 28-80mm G lens might be worth as a trade in for the Nikon D50 at Jessops? I went into a "local" photgraphy shop a few days ago and asked the assistant, who was obviously NOT a nikon fan and after a sharp intake of breath, he replied! (and I quote) "Why do you need a digital SLR? Surely a compact would be better?? I couldn't give your nikon F55 away, you'd be lucky to get £30 tops!" I surprised myself by being assertive and saying that I wanted the option to change lenses and that most SLR's give you so much more control than the majority of compacts (well done Jude!!) to which he replied, "well, why don't you buy the canon 30D then?" And as soon as I said I couldn't afford it, he lost interest and told me I'd regret buying the D50!!!
As I walked out of the shop, he waffled "I've been selling cameras for more than 30 years , Love!!!!" (Don't ya just hate being called "Love" when you're being put down!) :C And the rest was just a blur!!!!!! Needless to say, I won't be going back there!!! I'm surprised he's not gone bankrupt with that sort of attitude towards a potential customer! (so much for SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHOPS!!!)
I realise my F55 won't be worth a huge amount, but I've no idea how much to expect as part-exchange? I'm not expecting it to be much, but I had hoped for more than £30!!! Any rough estimates would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Hard as it is to accept, most photographic shops wouldn't take the camera, they just can't shift them themselves. Look at the big dealers lists, they are full of unsold F90's and F100's, even the F5's are hard to shift... but it's likely most dealers would still take the top models like an F5.

I did hear that Jessops are no longer taking 35mm equipment as p/ex, in fact a rumour was going around that Jessops branches, in future, would not be taking any used equipment in.

Sounds like your shop was staffed by a moron though... and even small independants can be like that.

Stick it on Loot or Ebay at a realistic price (£50-70?) and see what happens...

I've also heard that Jessops are no longer doing any part exchange... as Andy said, best bet will be to try and sell the camera privately, but you probably won't get much for it.

Sorry to hear that you had such bad service at your local shop, it is amazing the way some people are. From what I've seen and heard I'd be very suprised if you regretted getting a D50, it's clearly a very good camera.

Jessops are getting out of second-hand cameras altogether. Sadly film cameras are on the whole not selling, and therefore not of much interest to camera shops apart from the real specialists. Better to sell it privately - see what they are going for on eBay.

The D50 is extremely good, I have a D70 and most of what the D70 does, the D50 does also (albeit with a bit more messing around with menus).
