Hi all , I have a d200 and want a long tele lens , am I correct in thinking a 400 mm lens on a d200 actually equates to a 600 mm and with a 1.7 converter 1020mm ? or is my theory Crap !

In terms of angle of view, that's spot on. I think there may be different depth of field charachteristics (don't know) but in terms of getting a picture of a bird to be a certain size in your image, they are equivalent.
