my patch(GREEN WITIHNS) is an area of moorland in the pennines(uk). if anyone travels across the m62 it is the area to the north it has a reservoir 2 trees and lots of open space.it can be very frustrating to watch here as i have never had more than 20 species in a visit the lowest is 2!!. but it can be good with marsh harrier and grasshopper warbler seen on the same day in september 2005 and a hen harrier being mobbed by ravens this march.most breeding i keep quiet about as their are egg collectors visiting in the summer.

Hiya Sonic - think I know the place you mean. I lived up in Queensbury for a good number of years. That moorland birding can be a bit sparse I know! Do you have any means of transport? It may be worth your while to spend some time over at Ogden water (out on the Keithley road from you) - used to get the odd surprise turning up! Forget weekends in the nice weather though - won't go into details about some of characters that abound.

I was interested to see your picture from Google Earth. Made me go and look at my local patch (next to Gatwick Airport). I was really surprised to see that the photo must have been taken years ago. My patch is a fairly new nature reserve, opened six years ago, and the photo was taken when the building work for it was taking place - great gashes in the earth.

Anyway, I found it useful to get an idea of your local area from the photo. Great idea of yours. (Incidentally, I thought my patch could be dismal at times, but I've never had as few as two species in a visit, I think my lowest was six.)

hi yes it can be dismal the 2 species were seen on boxing day(carrion crow and herring gull) while eating the previous days left overs!!
