Currently experimenting with birdsong sound recording in a mobile sense. I used to run a rec studio (G8INA Studios) with over 10 releases to my name, but now being disabled, thats had to stop.

Just started recording birdsong in the back garden with my iRiver H120 20GB HDD MP3/WAV player. Very nice if you use WAV format, but I need to use ext mics, as the internal picks up the sound of the HDD motor whine.

Mics I have in plenty, but none are directional enough, so - anyone know where I can get a dish in the UK (not those cheap ebay ones at a fiver though) ??

Something from 12 inches to 24 inches, parabolic, and pref perspex/transparent.

The rest I can do meself ;)

Results will be posted when I have time for comparison purposes, with and without directional and with various mics. Listen to this space ;)

Augur Films supply Telinga stuff. I can PM you their details if interested.

You can get a Universal Handle and Dish ( no mic ) from them. Bad news is it will set you back £371 !! You could also get the Pro 4 PIP for the same cost and this has a basic mic built in. Pretty good for a digital recorder and 3.5mm input.

Amberwood ( ? ) also make dishes but I think these are heavier.

Check "poor mans" Telinga by Ermine on this Forum also.

You can't argue with the price of a CJ Wildbird squirrelguard (http://www.suffolkbirds.co.uk/article/42/poor-mans-telinga) for a first bash. If you don't rate it as a dish, you can still use it to keep those pesky squirrels off your nuts...

Thanks guys,

Looked at Telinga and shuddered ! Kerching £££ !

The CJ squirrel guard might be OK as a last resort but I really do want parabolic, and I do have an offer ongoing right now for said beastie. Fingers crossed and thanks to G.

I've aslo done some work on calculating gain of a parabolic setup, I can PM it to anyone with Excel if they're interested, or add it here as a text file. LMK.
