From aug 29 til sep 5 I'll be on vacation just under Ullapool (Badrallach) Scotland. Ofcourse nature itself seems to be stunning there, but are there any places that I should visit in that neighborhood and can anyone tell me what birds I am most likely to meet there?

We will be flying from Amsterdam to Edinburgh and drive up from there, probably via Inverness.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Difficult to know where to start Erik its a fabulous area. Good chances to see both eagle species if you head south west to the Gruinard Bay area. Inverpolly to the north is scenically wonderful and chances of both eagles again up there and it may be worth checking any wooded little valleys on the coast to see if there's any migrant american landbirds about. The area must be terribly under watched so should be a chance. Not sure whether there would be many breeding birds left on the lochs.

Worth trying some seawatching off any headlands as well.

I can wholly reccomend getting a copy of best birdwatching sites in the scottish highlands by Gordon Hamlett which has directions to the above sites and many more.

Hi,
There used to be a cruise out to see the seabirds and seals, but this was 10 years ago plus. Just a great place to be , loads to see. Take the mossie spray though, they can be ferocious!

I can recommend Achnahaird Bay, about 10 miles south west of Lochinver (or about 4 miles north west of the majestic peak of Stac Pollaidh in Inverpolly). I have had Red and Black-throated Divers, just offshore, for the last few years, at around the time you are going. Is there a better looking bird than a Black-throated Diver?

I'll be there slightly earlier this year - next week in fact.

Also, if you're keen on hill/mountain walking, most peaks around Loch Broom, esp southern end, will give you ptarmigan.
Top tip: Lochinver was mentioned in a previous reply. Well worth a visit but used to have the only cafe that I have ever encountered that closed for lunch!

The famous pie shop in Lochinver is well worth a visit.
