Following a reprt from two friends of Amanita virosa (Destroying Angel) at Gunton Wood Lowestoft I
decided to bring a speciman home for further study. After my initial
excitment died down I thought about the similar agaric Volvaria
speciosa, a much more common fungus which has recently found a liking
for wood chips. A spore print on black card confirmed my suspicions
this morning when I saw that the spores were in fact pink & not
white. The species is therfore V. speciosa.
Further searching this morning produced a single Bolbitus vitellinus,
& a small troop of Coprinus micaceus (Glistening ink Cap) & C.
disseminatus (Fairies Bonnets)
Also a young Polyporus squamosa (Dryads Saddle)
In nearby Corton Wood I found the beautiful Pleurotus corunucopiae. growing on a dead stump.
Not bad for high Summer
