Sunny, blue sky, no clouds ..... hot hot hot. Radio Broadland claimed it reached 30* ... superb day for walking from Yarmouth to Berney and back again. Walking out there was chatty 'house & home stuff' so I'll concentrate on the return leg.
At Berney train station (http://www.birdforum.net/pp_gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6517) we had an excellent place for watching as it was in the lee of a stand of trees so no wind to upset things. An absolute abundance of butterflies.
Dragonflies :
Brown Hawker
Southern Hawker
Ruddy Darter
Black-tailed Skimmer
Blue-tailed damselfly
Butterflies :
Comma
Essex Skipper
Gatekeeper
Meadow Brown
Painted Lady
Peacock
Red Admiral
Small Heath
Small Skipper
Small Tortoiseshell
Small White
6 Spot Burnet
Grayling .... I think
A blue one ???
Also lots of bees about feeding on the bramble at the staion & on the many thistle flowers that abound along one stretch of the path
Birds on the meadows :
Marsh Harrier (x2 on the island between Berney & Burgh Castle)
Swallow
Lapwing
woodpigeon
Meadow Pipit
Starling
Crow
Jackdaw
Kestrel
Birds along the riverside & mudflats :
Mute Swan
Mallard
Black-headed Gull
Common Gull
Herring Gull
Pied Wagtail
Egyptian Geese
Oystercatcher
Avocet
Curlew / Whimbrel .... too far away & no scope
Shelduck
Coot
Redshank
Black-tailed Godwit ..... at least 300
Grey Heron
Common Tern
Tufted Duck
Cormorant
