In order to get close on land to diving birds near the waters edge(diving ducks, cormorants, shags, grebes etc.) in order to photograph them or appreciate the beauty and colours of some species, there is a simple solution. Move towards them when they are submerged and remain absolutely still when they are on the surface. With a little observation from a distance you will be able to get an idea of the rough time that the bird remains underwater. For example Cormorants vary between 45 secs to 1 min.. So, it is possible to get a long way, in say 20 secs.

As with most things in nature, patience is always the resource which allows you to get closer to birds.
Stealth, clothing, keeping low etc. are all excellent......but once in position, blending into the background and waiting patiently will bring everything back close to you......I wish someone wuld invent really quiet packets for choc-chip cookies though!

Thanks for the advice on food!

The sensible thing is for me to switch to fruit and o try to be healthy!
Can't imagine a rucksack without those biscuits though!
