hi,i am looking to replace my trusty old 1000fn for a 300d.what i want to know is as the camera would be 6.7 mp in terms of resolution what would the equivalent film speed be on the cameras lowest iso setting?also i am currently using a sigma 400mm 5.6 APO lens.would this need to be chipped to use with a digital body,if so how much does it cost?thanks people.mike.

Mike cant answer your first question but as regards the Sigma yes this probably needed to have been rechipped to work on Canon digital some do most dont Sigma stopped rechipping these almost 2 years ago.

ISO is the same for film and digital sensors,
The Iso is a measure of the sensitivity to light, so 100 Iso film will expose at the same rate (shutter speed and aperture) as a sensor in a digital camera set at 100 Iso.

thanks nigel, but you didnt seem to understand my question.i know that the exposure will be the same but what i want to know is with film you get grain size.the slower the film speed the smaller the grain size.with digital you get noise.the slower the iso setting the less noise you get.on a 6.7mp camera set at 100iso,with regards to sharpness(noise level)what would the equivalant film speed be.i have heard some where that an 8 mp eos camera at the slowest iso (100) has better resolution(sharpness)and detail than 50 iso slide film.is this true?sorry if this has confused anyone(it confused me trying to write it!).but it is quite hard to put into words what i am trying to find out.thanks.

Oh right, I think you will find that at 100 iso on 6.7 Mp the difference will not be that noticable from 100 iso film, 100 iso film may capture slightly better detail but the digital images will look 'cleaner'.

But the 100 iso digital file will be loads better than a similarly shot 100iso slide that has been scanned, because a scanner also scans the grain on the slide and this can make the picture look 'dirty' and it shows up more when you use unsharp mask.

thanks nigel.i have noticed in the gallery the difference between film and digital pics.you can see they are a lot cleaner.it takes me forever adjusting this and that after scanning a print.this is why i want to switch to digital.plus no more wasting film.

You'll need to check the Sigma lens against any camera you intend to purchase. If it's a late-production HSM model there's a chance that it may work.

I've seen comments to the effect that lenses that haven't been back to Sigma for re-chipping work on some digital models such as the D60 (not sure about the 300D) but I wouldn't trust all comments that you see on the internet - checking for yourself is the only way to be sure.

Guessing that Walter's Photo Video is pretty close to where you live why don't you pop in with your Sigma lens and ask them if you can check it with a 300D. They seem like a pretty good shop to me - I'm sure they'd let you.

yes i went there last friday.i have always bought my gear from them.the lens does work from the 300d right up to the 1d mark11.the thing is that now i want either a 20d or the new 400d.if the lens did not work i was going to sell it to fund a better digital body.i am glad it does work though as it is a cracking lens.just have to save up for a bit longer.very friendly guys in walters i have to say.top shop!

Congratualtions on your purchase Mike - actually I part-exed my 300D at Walters a few months back - that would be a coincidence! Any chance you can say which hide you watched the hobbies from?
