I have been using this model for quite a while now and am very happy with it but when I shoot in manual, which I prefer, there is a noticeable delay (a secnd or so) between pressing the shutter release and the shutter actually working. When I switch to one of the special modes the shutter goes straight away, why is this? Is it just my camera? Is there a way of getting past this problem in manual mode or do I just have to perservere until I can afford to upgrade the camera? Does this problem occur on the 350d?

Hi Ian,
I don't have this model but it sounds like a problem with your camera. Assuming that focus is locked there should be no delay at all. It might be a known issue so if you don't get a response in this forum try dpreview, they have a 300D/350D forum.
Good luck,
Ricard

Problem solved, I looked through the advanced settings and noticed that the mirror lock up was on. I have disabled it and lo and behold it fires instantly.

Iain, you just sent me off running to check my 300D and it clicks absolutely normally, so came back to suggest it might be a fault with your camera, but now I see you've solved it :)

Thanks Jos, I installed the newer firm ware from the net and I must have Enabled the Mirror Lock Up when I first used the camera. It has been on that setting since Feb this year! I feel like a right idiot.

I would worry about that, I'd guess most of us know only a small percentage of what their camera functions are. As for 300D, not having need to use it, I didn't even know the camera had mirror lock ...except when in clean mode.

it's nice to know I'm not the only one who does that kind of thing. A couple of months ago we had what we thought was an Osprey high over the garden. I ran out with the camera and couldn't get it to focus. As you can imagine I was cursing like hell, damn autofocus etc etc. Then I realised I'd left the close-up lens on so it had a maximum focusing distance of about 18 inches ...LOL !
obviously the bird had gone by then.
Glad you sorted your camera out,
Richard
