Hi there
Does anyone use this battery grip BG-E2 ? does it only take the canon BP-511A batteries in pairs or can you just use one at a time ?
I have seen these on the Amazon site for £109, are they worth having for bird photography?
Cheers

You can use 1 battery in the grip, the benefit of having the grip is you get a vertical shutter release making it a lot easier for portrait style photos.

Hello Paul,
just my opinion ... I was considering too to buy it for my 20D (I already have a battery grip on my 350D), but now I'm not that sure ... unless you plan to use your camera "in the wild" for a prolonged time, BP-511A battery life is enough for a whole day of shooting (yesterday I took some 300 shots - no flash - and the camera was on for 8 hours - no problem at all, the battery is still half charged).
Vertical shutter release is a good thing, but much depends on how many portraits you usually take ... when needed, I swing the camera on the tripod ring to get some portraits, using a cable shutter release
I think I'll get myself a spare battery to keep charged in my backpack and save the money ;)
Cheers,
Max

Hi Paul
I have the 400D and use the grip, it takes 1 or 2 of the cannon battries or AA batteries which is very handy. I had mine off ebay for £40 what a saving eh! for that money i did wonder what i would end up with but it is as good as an original Cannon one costing very much more. I can send you the address if you like, it is German but only took 3 days in the post.
I find the handling now much better & fell very comfortable using it in both possitions, it also has a shutter button & settings wheel for verticle use just the same as an original. after spending out on the 400D the last thing i would want is a crap grip but take it from me this is a good one.
all the best

Thanks Wizard
I have iust bought one from Amazon for £108, And as you say it does improve the handling, next week I'm going up north so I will try it with two batteries to see how long it lasts.
Cheers

It'll last ages, Paul!
I bought a grip myself recently (£149 from Jessops).
I already have plenty of spare batteries, and - even though it obviously adds a bit to the weight when used handheld over a few hours - I like the feel of it on the 30D (and the 30D felt pretty good already in my hands).

Thanks Keith
Will give it a try at Leighton moss next Tuesday while I'm dossing off work!!
I like the feel of it too. On the 30D it seems to give it a better balance with longish lenses.
Cheers

A grip would be the first thing I'd buy with a new camera body.

Has anyone tried the Hahnel grip for the 350D (£55 Warehouse Express inc a spare battery). If it is as good as the Canon one it must be a good deal.

A deal is a deal ... I think it would be fair posting here the address (if the BF webmanager agrees), so you save yourself from PM everybody :scribe:
