Hi,
I'd much appreciate advice on what bins to buy between £80 and £120 for father-in-law for 60th birthday. Not easy to buy for some one else, but the family want me to. I'm thinking of the RSPB 8x40 asw at £109. He doesn't want compact bins, wants around x8 with plenty of light. Only an occasional birder.
Many thanks

For the occasional birder, the 8x40 roofs of various brands are OK. Not the very cheapest ones. They will not haul around a big 8x40 porro, so roofs are good.
Nearly all the models at

even the porros may work but are bigger as I said. The only ones at that site to stay away from are the Bushnell and Nikon zooms.

Probably one of the best options around for under £100 is the Hawke Blackwatch 8x42 WP. They're a porro prism binoculars, and fully waterproof and have twist up eyecups, optically you'll struggle to find better for the money. Best bet is to get to a shop andtry them yourself.

Are you an 'E-Bayer'? You can get some fantastic bargains on there! I bought a pair of really excellent Bushnell 8x40's for my Ma-in-Law for £8 delivered! Brand new! Still in the box! LOL!
Worth a look, I'd've thought!

I would recommend the Bushnell's as well. I bought a waterproof pair for £70 which are great for those occaisions such as stormy weather when you don't want to risk a more expensive pair.

Great, i'll have a look around. If they're too nice i 'spose i could keep them and pass my old pair on!
