I just learned :
"Avoid the cheaper CF recorders aimed at musicians - they are noisy with mics of the quality of the ME66 or better. That applies particularly to the M-Audio microtrack and its ilk."

Hi Kjeld,
I used my Edirol R-09 for the first time during my visit to Australia. I was using it in conjunction with a Sennheiser ME-66/K6 unit and a Shure A-96 matching transformer. I was able to get some decent recordings, but the gain is not terribly great, though I was able to do some post processing to improve that after the fact. Mine functioned okay, although I worry about it as I have read several negative reports of the mike imput jack failing prematurely on other's units. It also lacks a a recording buffer, which is a feature that can be quite useful with bird recordings.

Well, I can now attest to the remarkably poorly designed mic input on this unit. Despite my gingerly care using this in the field, mine has failed after about a month of use. This is a product that should be avoided until the manufacturer makes some serious modifications to its design.

Hi Chris,
Thank´s for your info.
Sorry you had problems with the recorder so soon.
I think we have to spend more money and I´m now looking for the Tascam HD-P2.

Hi, Chris.
This is really bad news.
My old Minidisc (the same one I had when I was with you and Al in Belize in 2000) is getting very cranky. I lost a couple of Song Wren recordings in Panama last week because of it. So I'm eagerly looking for something just as portable but more reliable, and I was hoping that the Edirol R-09 was the one.

Hey David,
When working, there was a lot to like about the R-09. Compared with any of the several minidisc recorders I've used, it was essentially two touch recording without the need to adjust the settings. And playback could be done immediately without having to wait for the track to write on the disk. I suppose a lot of folks are eagerly awaiting the Fostex FR-2LE Memory Recorder which may or may not come out some time in January. I'm at a loss as to what to do myself, but I guess I'll stick to the minidisc for a bit longer, or perhaps go for a bigger unit such as the Marantz PMD-671 or the Tascam HDP2.

I would recommend the Fostex Fr2 - it is not much bigger than the LE and it has extra functions. It really is not as big as it looks in the photos and is actually quite light. It isn't as light as a MD though !
