I'm sure others will be able to help you a little better than me as I tend to bird a little further north than Whitby, though we often visit the town for a look around and of course some Fish and Chips ;)

I take it you will have a car for transport ? I always like to visit Saltburn a few miles to the north a couple of times a year. The wooded valley can throw up some interesting species, though it's usually Spring that I go there. A little further north is Redcar with South Gare pier a very famous birding location attracting all sorts of interesting species, a well known migrant fall site as well as for the sea birds. If you're of a mind to cross the Tees then you're into my area and I'd be glad to show you around the area which could easily take a day, even in July, normally a quiet time. South of Whitby you can find RSPB Bempton, well worth a visit in July for the nesting Guillemots, Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Puffins, Gannets etc and then there is Flamborough Head nearby.

Wykeham Forest is nearby too, which has a raptor viewpoint, there are Honey Buzzards around at the moment.

As for Whitby itself I have never really birded. There are plenty of Gulls about on the river ;)

Not much help I know.

Eastwards along the cliff from the abbey is a good area - along past Saltwick Nab. You may see something out to sea or in the rock pools below. Look in the fields alongside as well.
