Hi all

Does anyone know how the auto-ISO feature works on the 400D? I've seen this feature mentioned in several reviews but never seen an explanation of how it works.

Many thanks.

Sean

If it's like other Canons, it'll only be in the Automatic modes, Sean.

The preview on DPReview (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0608/06082416canoneos400drebelxti.asp) says:

What's missing?

No programmable Auto ISO (such as seen on the Nikon D80, almost 'ISO priority')
And the review proper (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos400d/page29.asp) says in the "compared to [D80]" section (with my emphasis):

The D80 also gives you the surprisingly useful configurable automatic ISO Both of which imply that the 400D doesn't have Auto ISO as Nikon have implemented but instead has a limited implementation (only between 100 and 400 ISO) in the Auto modes.

I hope I'm wrong, but it does look like Canon have missed the boat a bit here - shame, 'cos Auto ISO is a brilliant thing.

That's a real shame Keith but I feared that would be the case. What would be fantastic would be to be able to set your aperture in AV mode, a minimum shutter speed below which you didn't want to go (depending on your lens and whether or not you were hand-holding, etc) and let the camera set the ISO accordingly. If the D80 allows you to do that then that is a huge advantage over the 400D for the type of bird photography that I guess most of us do, especially in the UK with our incredibly variable light.

I really loved the Auto ISO option on the D70 and D200s that I had. I used to shoot full manual, setting the aperture and the shutter speed I wanted, and the camera would always give the optimum ISO.

To be honest though I got used to not having it pretty quickly when I got my 30D.
