Well, Its got to be right sometime!. Anyway, I recognise the stern on the male!.

I think a Steward's Enquiry is in order,the post was entitled Mystery birdS,when in fact we have a mystery bird!

But there are two birdS - a male Gadwall, and a female Gadwall. Doesn't say two SPECIES!!

But wouldn't the heading 'Mystery bird' have been more descriptive!
Anyway ,we must be careful not to attract the attention of the (other) resident pedants and it is only sour grapes because I got the answer wrong!
I also have a pic of my own with a headless bird so i'll try it out as another quiz.
