Ok so I was about ready to send the mic back as 'defective,' but I took ermine's advice and called a few music shops to see if they could hook it up to different mixers or recorders and pinpoint the problem. I called a music store and they said they would do that, so I took my setup down there and they fixed it!

I'm pretty dumb when it comes to this kind of stuff... so I'll explain it in the simplest way!

Radio Shack and the other audio place I took it to both used the wrong XRL cable on it. The wrong one had 2 stripes on the tip. The guy at the music store used a 1-stripe XRL cable and hooked it up to my stereo-to-mono adapter (which has 2 stripes), and it worked fine. He said you will have problems when you try hooking 2-stripe XRL to 2-stripe adapters (was using technical stuff, like 'ground to ground' and what not, but he lost me!).

I must say that I am extremely satisfied with the ME66... it's amazing. However, I am very dissappointed with Sennheiser. I called them two times a day (long distance) for 4 days, and not one time did they pick up. They are supposed to be open 8 am - 8 pm... yet nobody seems to be around. I even left a message, and nobody got back to me. I also submitted an email to them, and nobody got back to me (it's been over a week).

Thanks again for the help!

Aha - so the cable that came with the ME66 is a stereo jack wired with the balanced cable to the left and right channels and shield to ground. So you feed the wanted signal to left and right but they cancel each other out, giving a weak signal, probably lacking in low frequencies.

The music shop supplied you with a balanced to unbalanced cable ending in a mono 3.5mm jack, and you then took that to the HiMD via a mono to stereo adapter.

It's good to know, in case someone else has this sort of problem with a ME66. Anyway, you got it sorted now - you now have an excellent recording rig, so all that's left now is for you to get out there at start recording! Enjoy - you'll be able to pick up a fair level of skill by next spring when the birds will be out en masse for you!

Incase anyone is using a ME67 or ME66 and experiencing similar probs I can recommend these :

This boys stuff is pretty good and the XLR to 3.5mm cable works fine from my ME67 into a MZ NH-900.
