Are Brazil nuts safe for wild birds?

I sometimes buy packets of mixed nuts from health food shops which are suitable for human consumption, but I'm not so keen on the Brazil nuts and hate to just throw them away. A search on Google shows up loads of sites suggesting Brazil nuts are okay for pet birds, but what about chopping them up and putting them with other nuts and seeds in the fat balls I put out?

This (http://birding.about.com/library/weekly/aa122097.htm) is the only article I found that suggested it was okay.

I think all nuts are acceptable to birds. I believe Brazils are in a woodpecker mix I buy at the feed store. And for all of those considering adding this as a selection, I am finding that MOST birds love the nuts.

I'm fairly certain that they are fine. the main problems with nuts as far as I understand is aflotoxin poisoning due to fungal contamination esp poor quality peanuts and overuse by parents feeding fledglings

Thanks for the replies. I ended up grating them through a course grater and mixing them into the seeds for fat balls. The Starlings were enjoying them yesterday, but not seen anything today... I'm hoping it's just the freezing fog and I didn't kill off all the Starlings!
