There is a chess playing adage - "when you see a good move, look for a better one". This can be applied to birds. When you find a 'good' bird....be it a rare one or a new one to you, always check around for another. It may have a mate or there may be a tiny flock. So even if you are seeing a relatively common bird for the first time or an out and out rarity, always check!

A very good tip Colin, I've benfitted from doing that on numerous occasions, especially at this time of the year when a lot of migrants are returning intially down the east coast but they will soon be moving inland. If you see something special, there is defintiely a good chance there may be something extra around too.
