Hi all, Ive been digi scoping with a Nikon Coolpix 995 and my Swarovski AT HD 80 scope for a few years now. (see my gallery for a couple of e.g.) Ive now managed to save up and get a Canon 30D camera. Until i can afford a decent lens (comes with a 75-300mm lens)for this camera I was wondering if you can connect it to a scope and use it for digiscoping.
Ive not looked into it and to be honest was just an after thought but it may come in handy. For all I know it might not be possible. But if it is suggestions on adapters would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time in replying!

You can digiscope with a dslr, but personally I'm not sure it's worth the hassle...

For your set up the best way of doing it would be to put the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens on your 30D and then attach it to your Swarovski using the DCA (if you have an older style eyepeice you'll need an additonal bit for the adapter). The lens and adapter will cost you ~£180, personally I'd rather use that money to start saving for a long lens.

Hi Mark
I too would be interested in finding out if it is possible. I have the Canon 30D and the 400mm lens, which is fine for much of the time, but we always want more reach don't we? Having said that, your digiscoped images are truly inspirational, and some of the best I've seen, and I wonder why you feel the need to change?
cheers, Ken

(slightly off topic!)
Hi Ken, Ive just been checking out your excellent website and am very embarassed to say that on your Angus Diary page this bit regarding the Bonarpartes Gull....
Another birder had been there since early morning and not found it, so I decided to give it a miss.
...refers to me! Cant believe we met last friday about noon! (I was in a red car)
Small world. What is more annoying was that Bob Mc, in true Bob style, went to the river mouth in the afternoon and spotted the Med and Bonarpartes Gull their. Apologies if I may have misled you into not looking for the gull but I had been in the area for a few hours and not seen it. It has been spasmodic mind. Anyway nice to sort of meet you and thanks for your kind comments about my pics! Keep up the website and again my apologies.

Right back to the DSLR discussion...

Its pretty much the range that I like with the digiscoping and Canon 30d is a better quality camera than my old Nikon coolpix995. Maybe the money would be put towards a 400mm lens? after all it is a quarter of the price.
Guess i want my cake and eat it!

The problem with the canon 50mm lens is that the front element of the lens is recessed into the lens by quite a distance, I bought one last year having been quite successful with the 18-55 kit lens, but I found that because the lens face was so far from the scope eyepiece that I struggled to get a good sharp focus, it left a rather soft image. The only problem I had with the kit lens was that it was awkward to fix the zoom at maximum.

Hi Mark,
Yes, it is possible. My son and I are playing with the idea, but haven't decided yet so we are not the voice of experience. For the details, go to bhphotovideo.com . You need an adaptor swca800ss ($460 !!) and a T-mount gbtmcaf ($17). This is a different approach than what you are using now, in that the D30 would not be shooting through the eyepiece. Rather, the adaptor/T-mount/D30 replaces the eyepiece. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? We don't know. You'll apparently end up with a manual f/12? setup. Hopefully someone with more experience will reply, and we'll all learn more. Lots of luck.
