It's probably a stupid question but could someone tell me please is it possible to buy a convertor which will enable me to use a Nikon lens with a Canon camera - or Canon lens with a Nikon camera - or is this asking the impossible? I know one can buy particular lenses made for the particular brand of camera - but I am wanting to interchange with my daughters equipment - is it possible?

Hi Kim, have a look at SRB Gitrin. they do all sorts of converters and have lots of usefull info on their web site. Also custom made for strange combinations. If it is possible they are the people to do it.

I seem to remember hearing that it is possible to mount a Nikon lens on a Canon body, but it is not possible to do it the other way round... I think it has to do with how far into the body the lens mount goes.

It's also down to the width of the hole in the camera.

The Canon mount is a lot wider than Nikon, and it's easy to imagine a converter that makes a wide hole narrower (Canon - Nikon) but not one that can make a narrow hole wider (Nikon - Canon).

They're common enough (http://tinyurl.com/2xd97h) on EBay.

...and the apertures on Canon lenses are controlled from the camera body, so they're not a lot of use on non-Canon bodies (other than at full-aperture).

Thankyou all for the information - I will look on E Bay and the SRB Gitrin site.

Interestingly, Bence Máté (http://www.iwpawards.com/winners2005.html) won the International Wildbird Photographer 2005 competition using a Nikon 300mm on a Canon 300D.

Sadly I don't think I am going to win any competitions but thanks for the information! It is interesting. Itr's a pity they didn't make all lenses interchangeable - perhaps that's asking too much!!
